Eastern Garter Snake
The eastern garter snake is the most common snake species in Ontario and is completely harmless. However, they sometimes cause problems when they take up residence in homes — typically in the fall, as basement walls below the frost line make excellent hibernation sites. The most common entry point is through foundation weep holes.
Massasauga Rattlesnake
The massasauga rattlesnake is Ontario’s only native venomous snake. While populations have been recovering over the last 20 years, they remain relatively rare. They are not aggressive but will bite to defend themselves. When in doubt, leave any snake alone and call a professional.
