Raccoon Health Risks
While raccoons rarely transmit diseases to people and their pets, the diseases they do carry are serious:
- Raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis): Transmitted through feces. Rare but serious — there is no effective cure at present.
- Canine roundworm: Passed between dogs and raccoons.
- Fleas, lice, and ticks: Raccoons can bring external parasites into your home.
- Rabies: Transmitted through blood and saliva. Fatal if untreated — ensure your pets are vaccinated.
